In the past six months, I’ve read less than fifty books. Yes, it’s bad. Normally, when I’m in a slump, I’ll reread my favorites, or get a new contemporary novel, just to ease myself back into reading. Check and check, but I’m still not reading as much as I would like to. I have the time, but I have no desire to read. No book sounds appealing to me. So, last night, after I got home from Kentucky, I used a Barnes and Noble gift card and bought the Nook version of Katie Kassidy’s What Goes Up. I really enjoyed Learning to Swear in America, which I read last year, but right from the start, I just picked the whole book apart. I didn’t like 90% of the novel, and once again, I didn’t want to write a blog post about it. But, I want to write blog posts. So, this long and boring story has an end, and more importantly, a message. It’s been around a year and a half of Books for Julia, and I love this blog. I love reviewing books. But I’ve confined myself to this tiny area of interest, books, when I talk about so much more in real life. I love television, fashion, decorating, horses, traveling. I am passionate about social issues. So maybe it’s time to grow a bit more than I had thought. Of course, I will absolutely read and review books. But this website started as a place for me to express my thoughts, and since I have unintentionally boxed myself into only writing about books, I’ve missed out on truly expressing myself here. I know that I could keep my domain, but I want to start over, and have no “box” for myself.
Later today, Books for Julia will become Earth to Julia. I’ll review books, movies, television and music. I’ll document my adventures with my friends and family (I’m going to the U.K. in a week!) I’ll write about fashion and social issues. I want this new start to expand my skills as a thinker and a writer as I start my senior year and get ready to become an adult. So, thanks for reading, and hopefully you’ll continue to do so.
