Today was my first day back at school, so since I’m feeling sad about break ending (and didn’t review for a week there because I was hanging out and reading a LOT) I’m listing all the books I received/bought with gift cards/read over my two-week hiatus from school!
THE MIDNIGHT STAR (Marie Lu) TBR
I’m currently reading this right now (I’m only on page 15, but I’m getting there). I’m really excited to finish the series and have all the hardcovers next to each other on my shelf (*heart eyes*)
HEARTLESS (Marissa Meyer)
My first read of 2017! Marissa Meyer is such an amazing author that even though I am not the biggest fan of Alice in Wonderland I still asked for this because I knew it would be amazing. Look at that, I was right. (4.5/5 stars)
A THOUSAND NIGHTS (E. K. Johnston)
The biggest thing about this book that bothered me was the fact that you never learn the narrator’s name. It was really hard to connect to her because of that. The ending was also a bit rushed, but otherwise the plot and world-building were definitely memorable. (3.5/5 stars)
THE FEMALE OF THE SPECIES (Mindy McGinnis)
The huge feminist tones in this book made me extremely happy. However, I did not think it was going to be that violent. I was wrong. It was very emotional with just enough humor to keep me going which was lovely, but the synopsis did not prepare me for the amount of gore. Fair warning. (4.75/5 stars)
THE SUN IS ALSO A STAR (Nicola Yoon)
You can read my full review for this book here. (Spoiler alert: I
freaking loved it) (4.75/5 stars)
FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM: THE ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY (J. K. Rowling)
This is honestly my favorite movie, possibly of all time, so reading this was so much fun. I loved reading the stage directions and the dialogue after watching it, which added to the experience when I saw it again yesterday (I am a nerd. No shame.). (5/5 stars)
BOUGHT WITH GIFT CARD:
AN EMBER IN THE ASHES (Sabaa Tahir)
For some reason, I just got to this book, even though everyone has been gushing about it for almost a year now and the sequel came out a little while ago. It did not disappoint. I’m so excited to read the second book after falling in love with the characters and world during this story. (4.75/5 stars)
FINDING MR. BRIGHTSIDE (Jay Clark)
I liked the premise of this book, but the character development (which should have been flying in my face) wasn’t as prominent as it should have been. The plot was also pretty foggy, so I wasn’t very happy finishing this. (2.5/5 stars)
THE CASE OF BEASTS (Mark Salisbury) TBR
Another Fantastic Beasts book! I’m obsessed. When this comes in the mail, I’m going to make something with my Harry Potter cookbook (also a gift) and read all about my new favorite characters.
Although I’m sad my break is over, it’s nice to be back in the groove of things and actually knowing what day it is. I finished 2016 with 103 new books read, some rereads, and a bunch of blog posts. My reading goal for 2017 is 100 books (again, since I almost didn’t make it there), but as we go, I may increase/decrease it. How was your 2016? (I’m hoping it was swell). Happy reading in the new year!
